OFFERINGS FROM INDIANNESS.
ABOUT
In 2023, Prem set up a studio practise based in Pune, drawing upon his fascination for the fusing Indian cultures. He designs objects, lighting, furniture and functional art from the myriad exchanges of rich cultures, and contemporary imagination. To re-investigate materials, ancient craft techniques with an artistic lens and refine a vocabulary of collectible design, truly captures the spirit of PRJA. His early upbringing and travelling across the country shaped curiosity to learn about the indefinite ability of cultures to co-exist, adopt and redesign shared influences. He refers to it as the idea of Indianness.
During his training in miniature painting from Jaipur, he new found interest in learning ethnic material cultures. Each region, each hand, each material - speaks a different perspective. At PRJA the commitment to experiment and collaborate across diverse craft languages to bring a unique expression of Indian contemporary design brings value to the practise. We focus on learning and archiving the sensibilities of the craft cultures passed on from generations, preserving its soul for the future. Each piece, a fragment of India's many evolving craft cultures, a quiet celebration of the becoming. A modern heirloom.
